Colchester station is hard to get to unless you're an experienced road cyclist, but hundreds do it every day, some walking the last 100 yards or so. Cycle parking is good on the south side and due to be improved on the north side. One (our local railway company) has bike parking at more than 80% of its 167 stations. Across its network it offers almost 2000 cycle parking spaces. For details of carrying your bike on the train, see the link below. Unfortunately, not all UK rail companies are as good - if you are going farther afield, you will need to plan your journey!
Broadly speaking, Essex County Council looks after cycling and other transport matters, Colchester council looks after planning and green transport plans.
If you are writing to our councils on a cycling matter, please liaise with Colchester Cycling Campaign to ensure your efforts aren't being duplicated.
