Be safer, get trained

Think you can ride a bike? Maybe you need to think again. A new National Cycling Standard puts forward the best way to ride, and it can be an eye-opener, even for those who have been in the saddle for years.

Leaving enough room in case a car door opens and knowing when to ride high in the road to stop that car overtaking are essential skills for cyclists.

Essex choolchildren are the lucky ones because many (though not all) of them get training for free - usually in year six, the top year in primary school.

For those who miss out, and adults wanting to brush up on their skills, private training is available. Why not book a family course?

There are two schools of cycling serving people in Essex.

Cycle Training East covers Essex and Suffolk and is keen to take on more instructors. CTE trains both adults and childre, working in co-operation with Essex County Council.

The London School of Cycling serves people who want to ride in the capital, but beware, the site is very red and sunglasses are recommended.
